Spoke to Yandi at Audio Art & Technology. Booked my car in for Thursday 24th Jan 2008 to fit a head unit, mount HKS EVC controller under the head unit, install power cable for radar detector near rear view mirror, and install Dynamat sound deadening in the doors. Will be $440 plus the cost of the head unit plus about $50 to install the head unit. He quoted $550 to supply and fit a Pioneer 7950UB.

Dropped off car at Audio Art & Technology (Murray St, Perth).
I provided Alpine CDA-9887 head unit, and HKS EVC 5 display unit.
They will install the head unit, mount the HKS EVC display unit under the head unit (but not fully install it), provide and install Dynamat sound deadening in the front doors, provide and install Pioneer 165 splits in the doors, provide and install a hardwiring kit for my Bel RX65 radar detector.

~10:15am: Dropped off Evo IX at Allstar Garage.
4pm: Plazmaman intercooler piping kit arrived.
6:45pm: dropped off Plazmaman intercooler piping kit to Allstar Garage.
Car made 199 hp (148.45 kW) @ all four hubs stock standard.
After mods (minus the intercooler piping) and tuning it made 264.8 hp (197.5 kW) @ all four hubs. A 33% gain over standard.
Wednesday 30 January 2008
Allstar Garage finished off work on my car. Fitted Plazmaman intercooler piping kit, tidied up interior, etc.
~5:30pm: picked up the car.
Total cost of fitting parts and tuning was $2711.50.

30 April 2007: Called Brendan from Raceworks on 0404 035 426.
He could provide me with free software and then maps configured for a car with my level of mods, that I can then download onto the car myself via an OpenECU cable and a laptop.
The cable is about $150 and the tune will cost around $500.
Said the Raceworks exhaust is not too loud.
30 April 2007: Called All Star Garage on (08) 9248 7433.
They can tune Evo IX ECUs using a system called Verso. Includes fuel, ignition, boost control, etc.
Costs $990 for initial tune including dyno time.
After that it will be ~$230/hr for a retune.
They estimated that the labour to install a full turbo-back exhaust, panel filter, blow off valve, fuel pump, boost gauge, and boost controller, would be in the vicinity of $500.
2 May 2007: Clint had his white Evo IX tuned by All Star Garage with similar mods to what I am considering. Got 236kW @ hubs. The thread is here.
3 May 2007: got price from Rob from Racework (Lord Baldy from EvolutionOz.net) for dump pipe, front pipe, high flow cat, shipped to Perth. $979 all up.
3 May 2007: Vision R has Trust PE Ti-R cat-back exhaust for $1599, Tomei Expreme dump/front pipe kit for $899, MR metal blow valves for $200. No stock of flanged Metal cat ($55) or Cusco carbon rear strut brace type CB ($330).
17 May 2007: Asked about ceramic coating on EvolutionOz.net forums. Jeff Ash (jash) from C-Red recommended Lyndon from Techline Coatings. Phone 0500 899 988. Gave him a call. He is a one-man operation so give him a call before dropping stuff off. $38/foot for 3” pipe. Address: 29 Blackboy Grove, Wandi (south just off Ankatell Drive).
A rear strut brace and stiffer rear swaybar would be a good start. The cheapest option for lowering the car would be to get the Whiteline lowering springs ~$300.
Better than lowered springs would be to get coilovers. Tein Super Street are Tein's budget option. Next up are the Tein Flex. Compatible with EDFC. Lots of other brands - Cusco, Zeal, HKS, Buddy Club, etc. Nengun has Tein MonoFlex. Flex seem to be superceded. Pete from Wilkinsons recommended either sticking with just springs or getting some good coilovers; he recommended KW (German brand) and said to avoid the Jap brands.
Good thread on suspension: http://www.evolutionoz.net/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=188
I asked about Evo IX stock spring rates here.
According to Targa Tom, the stock spring rates are:
Front: 280 lbs/inch
Rear: 310 lbs/inch
Given that:
So the stock spring rates are:
Front: 5.0 kg/mm
Rear: 5.4 kg/mm
29 April 2007: I started this thread on suspension: http://www.evolutionoz.net/forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=9602
30 April 2007: Phoned Wilkinsons Suspension Centre on (08) 9370 2646.
Spoke to Peter.
He said that Whiteline no longer make kits; just sell individual parts.
He recommended that I get the rear swaybar and 4 lowered springs.
He said that If I want to go for coilovers that I should go for KW (German made). He said to avoid the Japanese Teins, Cuscos, HKS, Budd Club, etc.
To supply & fit a rear swaybar, 4 lowered springs, and fit a rear strut brace that I supply, would be $789 all up.
Will take 7-10 days for parts to come in once I order.
Some cars that look nice include the following:
Nice silver evo VIII
-
Work VS-TX 18×9 staggered rims wrapped with Pirelli Corsa 255-40-18 tires
Do-Luck chin spoiler, Varis CF bumper cooling ducts, and a Mitsubishi MR Vortex generator
Nice wheels that I like include:
Work VS-TX
Volk CE28N
Enkei NT-03
Advan RS gunmetal
Also:
Questions to ask:
Is there a pillar mount gauge pod (Monsta pod) that doesn't obscure the tweeter or Intellitrac controls?
Do people have turbo timers on their Evo IXs? Does it interfere with Intellitrac?
-
General consensus seems to be that turbo timers are unnecessary.
If I do get one, will have to wait for car to turn off before being able to arm Intellitrac.
Verdict: don't bother.
Ask for advice about my proposed engine mods: full turbo back exhaust, ECU reflash, fuel pump, electronic boost controller.
Ask about handling mods: whiteline swaybar kit, rear strut brace, lowered springs or coilovers
-
Call Wilkinsons Suspension on (08) 9370 2646.
Get quote for Whiteline handling pack (installed).
Also ask about Tein coilovers (or similar) vs Whiteline lowered springs and ask for prices.
Also install of rear strut brace (Cusco).

Decide on exhaust:
Raceworks full system $1805 + shipping
CES full system $2630
Trust PE Ti-R $1595 & Tomei Expreme kit $899 & Metal Cat (flanged ready to fit) $550 (all from Vision R) = $3039
Trust PE Ti-R $1595 & Tomei Expreme kit $899 & Raceworks cat $300 = $2794 –> Tomei extreme won't fit onto standard cat
Trust PE Ti-R $1595 & Tomei Expreme kit $899 (from Vision R) plus cat $300 = $2794
Trust PE Ti-R $1595 & Raceworks dump pipe, front pipe, cat $979 = $2574
HKS Silent Hi Power $999 + & Raceworks dump pipe, front pipe, cat $979 = $1978
Kakimoto Racing Regu 06 & R $900 (Nengun) & Raceworks dump pipe, front pipe, cat $979 = $1879
To do:
The plan:
Order custom number plates. Check availability.
Order from Vision R: Trust PE Ti-R exhaust, Tomei Expreme dump pipe & front pipe kit, MR metal BOV
Order from Raceworks: high flow cat (flanged to fit in place of Evo IX stock cat)
Order from Just JDM: Cusco carbon rear strut brace, Walbro 255L/hr pump, Ralliart panel filter, Resart number plate relocator, Goodridge braided brake lines, Ralliart brake booster support
Order from Nengun: HKS EVC V, Defi boost gauge & control unit
Once engine parts have arrived: book into All Star Garage for fitting & tuning
Once rear strut brace has arrived: book in to Wilkinsons for rear swaybar, lowered springs, get rear strut brace
The exchange rate (Japanese yen to Australian dollars) is really good (around 99.4:1) at the moment, so it might be cheaper to source parts direct for Japan through Nengun or Greenline.
