New home theatre components
I have pretty much finished off my home theatre system! I already had the following components:
- Samsung 107cm widescreen rear-projection TV (standard definition)
- Yamaha DVD-S550 DVD player
- Yamaha RX-V1500B 7.1 receiver
- Acoustic Energy Aegis Evo 3 front floorstanding speakers
- Chord Carnival Silver speaker cable
- Custom-built home-theatre PC (details to follow)
And yesterday I purchased:
- Acoustic Energy Evo centre speaker
- Acoustic Energy Evo 1 rear speakers
- Lovan Affiniti 29” speaker stands
- Richter Thor 12” active subwoofer
I got all the gear (except for the TV and HTPC) from Sound Advice on Murray St. If you are in the market for home theatre gear, give them a try. From my experience they are friendly guys that give good advice and won’t bullshit you.
The Acoustic Energy Evo speaker series is highly recommended and has won a lot of awards in magazines such as What HiFi; same goes for the Yamaha receiver. I didn’t go with the Acoustic Energy sub that is part of the set because from what I could gather, it is expensive and rather small, and other subs (such as the Richter Thor) are better. So now I have a complete 5.1 system that is awesome for music (in stereo or 2.1 mode) and movies too (in 5.1 mode).
I predict that the TV and DVD player, and possibly the receiver, will date fairly quickly, especially with new formats such as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. However I hope that the speakers and sub will last me for many years.

Yeah, proper. Shame it will only be used for watching old “The Nanny” re-runs…
